The breather valves attached to the axle housings are installed to release air that expands due to high temperatures caused by driving. They lower the internal pressure of the differential, prevent damage to the drive shaft oil seals, and prevent differential oil leakages. However, if water is splashed on the axle housing when it is hot due to driving, it will cool down rapidly and create negative pressure inside the axle housing. If water gets mixed into the differential oil, it can cause wear on the differential gear, which is stressful, and rust on the bearings, which can lead to damage in the worst case.
To overcome these issues, we recommend these breather extension kits which act similar to snorkels. This product includes a 2m silicone hose, and the front and rear valves can be relocated 1m each above Jimny's floor level such as the top of the engine bay (just under the bonnet) or just below the fuel filler. It allows the differential to breathe with changes in temperature and atmospheric conditions even if the differential is submerged in water. They are ideal products for off-roading where the differentials are submerged in water.
Also, due to the structure of the valve, air enters and exits, so a small amount of moisture will gradually get mixed in due to condensation. However, when the temperature is high, oil mist air is released, causing dirt to accumulate and further reducing the sealing performance even in the original conditions. These products are also good replacements for original vents that failed due to blockage or fatigue.
